Bickington’s Silver Jubilee Flower Show

Bickington’s Silver Jubilee Flower Show

Bickington is about to celebrate the 25th year of its annual Flower Shows by combining with the Village Hall Management Committee to mount a joint Silver Jubilee Show & Village Fete on Saturday, 4th August.
The event will be opened at 2.30pm at the Village Hall by Radio Devon’s Tony Beard.

This year’s Show includes a class for young people to make scarecrows and a competition for both adults and young people for growing the tallest sunflower. The fete will have plenty of stalls, the ever-popular plate smashing, a bouncy castle and live music from Five Finger Eddy
The organisers are hoping for some genuine summer weather so that visitors can enjoy their cream teas.

Background
In the 1980s Bickington had a strong link with the minesweeper, HMS Bickington, and a mini-horticultural show took place each year to coincide with visits by the crew. In 1987 this event ended but the Parish Council decided that a small annual flower show should continue. A committee was formed under the chairmanship of the late Gower Morgan and has continued ever since.

The Gower Morgan Cup is the trophy for the overall winner. There are three shields for the flower, vegetable and domestic classes, two Whitbread shields for young people, and a Carrett Perpetual Cup for an outstanding entry by a young person.

The current Chairman, Brian Smith, will be standing down this year, after 5 years.
